Independence Day (15-8-1947)

On 15 August 1947, India attained freedom from the British Rule. Every year, August 15 is celebrated as the Independence Day in India. This national festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm all over the country.

This is a national celebration that is enjoyed in every corner of the country. Certainly, in New Delhi the celebration is special. Here the Prime Minister hoists the national flag at the Red Fort and delivers a speech that is broadcast on television from the wall of the fort. In his speech highlights all the achievements of his government during the past year, about important issues and calls for further development of the nation. The prime minister also made a tribute to all those leaders who fought for freedom.

India achieved independence following the Indian independence movement noted for largely peaceful nonviolent resistance and civil disobedience led by the Indian National Congress. The independence coincided with the partition of India wherein the British Indian Empire was divided along religious lines into two new nations, Republic of India) and Islamic Republic of Pakistan. The partition was stricken with violent communal riots. Millions of Muslim, Sikh, and Hindu refugees trekked across the newly drawn borders. In Punjab, where the new border lines divided the Sikh regions in halves, massive bloodshed followed;
In Bengal and Bihar, where Mahatma Gandhi’s presence assuaged communal tempers, the violence was mitigated. In all, anywhere between 250,000 and 1,000,000 people on both sides of the new borders died in the violence.
