Rabindra Nath Tagore (1861-1941), the great Indian poet, philosopher, musician, writer, and educationist- was born on May 7, 1861.

He was a freedom fighter, educational reformist through experimental school at Shantiniketan, painter, musician, novelist but it is his poetry that caught the imagination of his country men and world.

He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913 for Gitanjali.Known mostly for his poetry, Tagore wrote novels, essays, short stories, travelogues, dramas, and thousands of songs. Of Tagore’s prose, his short stories are perhaps most highly regarded.

Rabindra Nath Tagore has the unique distinction of being the composer of the national anthems of two nations- the Republic of India ́s Jana Gana Mana and Bangladesh’s Amar Shonar Bangla.
