Lakshmi is the goddess of prosperity, purity and generosity.
Lakshmi, is also known as Sri which means prosperity.
Lakshmi is Vishnu’s consort in each of his incarnations. When he became Rama, she was Sita. When he became Krishna, she was Radha and so on.

Lakshmi is a goddess with four arms and four hands. She has normally a bright golden skin. She has golden coins and lotuses in her hands.

Two (sometimes four) elephants are shown next to the Goddess. The spraying of water by the elephants denotes activity.
She wears red clothes with a golden lining and is standing on a lotus.
Standing on a lotus symbolizes transcendence.

Of the Hindu gods and goddesses, Lakshmi is the Goddess of light, beauty, good fortune and wealth. She is a very popular goddess.

The Dipawali festival of light is associated with Lakshmi. Houses are brightly lit by lamps because it is believed that wealth (Lakshmi) will not enter a house which is dark.
