Swami Dayanand Jayanthi

Swami Dayanand Saraswati Jayanthi celebrates the birthday of Swami Dayananda Saraswati, the founder of Arya Samaj. His was born on February 12, 1824.
Dayanand Saraswati was one of the greatest religious leaders ever born in India.

Maharishi Dayanand Saraswati, as he was popularly known to the world, yearned for Krinvanto Vishwamaryam to make the entire world a group of good people.
He was responsible, to some an extent, in bringing back the age-old teaching tradition of Gurukul.Swami Dayananda Saraswati established the foundation of Arya Samaj in 1875. The primary objective of Arya Samaj is to do well to the whole world by improving the physical, spiritual and social conditions of society. Today, the presence of Arya Samaj is felt in more than 100 countries.

Satyarth Prakash, meaning the light of truth, is the most important text and guide of the Arya Samaj. It was written by Swami Dayananda Saraswati to propagate the true teachings of the Vedas. Dayanand Sarasvati believed that the Vedas were perfect and infallible. Dayananda advocated the doctrine of karma, skepticism in dogma, and emphasised the ideals of brahmacharya (celibacy and devotion to God).
He preached against Hindu traditions of polytheism, untouchability, child marriages, idol worship, caste by birth, and the discrimination against females.

Due to his radical thought, Swami Dayanand had acquired enemies from all spheres of life. On the occasion of Deepavali in 1883, he was a guest of the maharaja of Jodhpur. The king was a womanizer and Dayanand advised the king to lead a righteous life as a ruler, upsetting a mistress by the name of Nanhi Jan. That night Swami Dayanand was poisoned during the festival meal. Swami Dayanand Saraswati breathed his last chanting Om.
