The Hindi writing is called Devanagri and has swar (vowels)and wjandjan (consonants).

These vowels (swar) are only used at the beginning of words.
The hindiwriting is a calligraphy .Because it is not always possible to combine the vowels and wjandan in a nice way, the vowels are replaced by other signs unless the word starts with a vowel. These signs are called Maatra (= the vowel replacing sign)
